Why War With Iraq
"Why war with Iraq?" Years later, billions of dollars later and after thousands of American and Iraqi people killed, the question lingers on many peoples' minds. Why did we fight this war? Was it worth it? In our hindsight, many of us believe it was not worth it. We still question why we went to Iraq. For their freedom? They seem unwilling to fight or die for it. Was it to take out a bad leader? The current leadership is not much better. We went there because there was the belief that there were WMD (weapons of mass destruction.)
Read the WMD page.
Presidents depend on experts to tell them what is going in the world. The United States spends billions of dollars each year on intelligence gathering. So the President is sitting at his desk in the oval office and he is surrounded by four experts. Two tell him there are WMDs in Iraq and two say there are not. Who does he believe? The President knows that Iraq has WMDs since Iraq has used them against the Kurds and Iranians. He knows they have them because his country sold some to the Iraqis. He also knows that other countries sold them some as well. So based on this and the urging of his friends across the ocean, he goes to war. The war is over quickly. But instead of bracing freedom, the people go on a pilfering spree that would make the gangs of California proud.
The military had no clue what to do. So the stealing went on for a few days before it was brought to a halt. But the damage had been done.
Instead of using this new freedom to bring peace to the country, individual groups of insurgents sat out to occupy as much they could. Kill as many as they could. They wanted to set up their own little kingdom.
Well, the US would not allow this.
So, here we are years later, still fighting with really no end in sight.
