Camp Salerno Afghanistan
This page talks about Salerno Afghanistan otherwise known as Camp Salerno or FOB Salerno.
FOB (Forward Operating Base) Salerno is located north of Khost.
Khost is a city in eastern Afghanistan. It is the capital of Khost province, which is a mountainous region near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan. The population of Khost province is over one million people.
Recently, FOB Salerno was the scene of the Afghani who betrayed the CIA and killed seven CIA operatives. I have been saying for some time now that there is not one Afghani person you can trust. One must always be on their guard around them.
Camp Salerno is in the province of Khost, close to the border with Pakistan, where hundreds of Taliban and al-Qaeda cowards are believed to be hiding.
It is named after Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark, the Fifth Army, a great Allied force composed of the British 10 Corps and the United States VI Corps, who carried out the first large scale invasion of the European mainland and secured a firm base for future operations in Italy at Salerno.
An Italian light infantry group had been in control of daily operations out of Salerno since March 2003. While in Khost or Khowst, (depending on who is doing the spelling) the Italian soldiers conducted the first air assault in the history of the Italian army.
They were in Operations Haven Denial and Warrior Sweep with the 82nd Airborne Division, Afghan National Army and Special Operation Forces. They conducted more than 2,000 conventional patrols that led to the disposal of many weapons caches, and they developed a strong relationship with local Afghans.
Italian Task Force Nibbio handed over the reigns of Salerno Forward Operating Base to New York's 10th Mountain Division during a transfer of authority ceremony 15 September 2003.
Task Force 1-87 of 10th Mountain Division took over operations at the FOB near the southeastern border of Afghanistan. Their main responsibilities were providing security for the firebase, and protecting the forward landing strip and helicopter-landing zone.
Since September 2003, the FOB has been built up from a single concrete building and sand bag perimeter that was originally located at the facility. The perimeter has since been extended.
Wooden floors for the tents have also been laid down. Guard towers and defense positions have been built. The landing strip located at the site has been repaired and a helicopter pad has been constructed.

FOB Salerno is also the base where the 2nd woman in Military History won a Silver Star.
Specialist Monica Lin Brown, a 19-year-old medic from Texas, will become the first woman in Afghanistan and only the second woman since World War II to receive the Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest medal for valor.
Specialist Brown saved the lives of fellow soldiers after a roadside bomb tore through a convoy of Humvees in the eastern Paktia province in April 2007, the military said.
US forces still occupy Camp Salerno Afghanistan today and will as long as the United States is in Afghanistan. It is still a dangerous place to be.
