Population Of Iraq
The Shiite people or Shi'a people are the majority of the population of Iraq. They have opposed the Iraqi government for a long time.
Saddam Hussein
took many steps to repress them. He used military police and the paramilitary to accomplish the suppression of these people.
He had them tortured, raped, and murdered, along with countless other forms of torture.
These people are the minority in the Islam religion but the majority of Iraq. They still await their leader from allah. They believe that their god, allah, hid the son of a caliph during his father's funeral back in 874 AD. They believe he will emerge one day and lead Islam.
It is interesting to note that the mosque in which this special hiding of the caliph was performed was blown up this week, on June 13, 2007 in Samarra. The minarets of the mosque were destroyed this time. In February of 2006, the golden dome of this same mosque was blown up. The Sunnis are believed to be responsible for both of these incidents.
In retaliation, the enemies of the Sunnis have been spending the rest of the week blowing up various Sunni mosques throughout Iraq.
This sect of Muslims is only about 10% of the Islamic population of one billion people worldwide. That is a lot of people, yet a small number in comparison to the amount of Sunni people.
Most of these Muslims live in the Middle East. 90% of Iran is made of Shi'as. Their holy book is the koran.
