People In Iraq

The people in Iraq are divided into sects. The Taliban is a group of fundamentalist Sunni Muslims. They ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. Then their leaders were taken from power by American air bombings and the Northern Alliance ground forces.

Leftover Sunni groups are now fighting against the current government of Afghanistan and NATO forces.

This evil group of people in Iraq treats women inhumanely. Women must wear a burka which covers them from head to toe, except for a little window in the face so they can see. Women cannot work. Girls cannot go to school after they turn eight years old. Prior to turning eight, they could only study the koran.

If women try secretly to get an education, death is their punishment, along with that of their teachers.

Women cannot be treated by a male doctor unless another male accompanies the woman. This means some illnesses will not be treated because the woman does not feel comfortable talking about certain medical problems since she could be punished by death if she has them. Think about it. Women can be publicly flogged and executed for violating their laws.

This movement was started by Mullah Mohammed Omar and a group of military commanders and teachers, many of whom had studied in Islamic schools in Pakistan. They received their training, supplies, and arms from the Pakistani government.

The Taliban was in control of Kabul, Afghanistan's capital for five years but was only recognized diplomatically by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

They were denied recognition by the United Nations, the United States, Russia, Iran, India, and Turkey because of its lack of basic human rights for women.

These fun-deprived people in Iraq also ban TV, movies, videos, music, dancing, pictures on walls in private homes, and clapping during sporting events. Men cannot shave and women must cover up with a burqa at all times. A 9pm curfew is imposed and that includes the men.

Learn about culture in Iraq.

For entertainment purposes, Mullah Mohammed Hassan, who is a Taliban official has been quoted as saying that he wants people to go to parks and see the flowers. He feels that this will teach them about Islam.

Osama bin Laden moved from Sudan to Afghanistan in 1996. He forged an alliance between the Taliban and his movement, Al-Qaeda.

Iraq's fighting is between the Sunni and the Shiite people in Iraq.

Saddam Hussein was supported by Sunnis.

Currently in Iraq, the Sunni insurgency continues with daily killings of Iraqi civilians and American soldiers.

***Update*** The British soldiers recently left Basra, allowing Iraqi forces to take over there.
