Living In A Tent In Iraq

by Dave
(Texas)

In 2004, when I first got to Iraq, I lived in a communal tent with a bunch of other guys for the first few months. I was living in a tent in Iraq on two different bases. This was a common occurence until more housing was put up for new troops and civilians.

Once I got in my housing, I was much more comfortable. Two rooms are attached to a common bathroom for two people. If the person in the adjoining room is heavy or makes a lot of noise, you feel the whole place move and you can pretty much hear everything. But it is still way better than living in a tent in Iraq.

Sharing a bathroom with one other person can be a pain at times, but it is okay. I ended up staying in the same permanent housing unit for 18 months minus a few R&R's and it worked out fine.
