Iraq War Politics

Back in the USA, there seems to be a lot going on with Iraq war politics.

Everyone from the media to those who are running for the presidential election in 2008 are talking about ending the war and about all of the things they would have done differently.

As I watched some of the memorial services dealing with 9/11 this year (2007) from the Middle East, I wondered if America has forgotten why we are in Iraq. I wondered if the politicians and the media had forgotten the President's words that the war on terrorism would be a long war.

As the American death toll adds up, Americans get discouraged. We need to set aside the Iraq war politics. We forget that in a matter of minutes 6 years ago, 3000 Americans perished. And there is no telling what damage would have been caused by the last plane had it hit its intended target.

If the United States were not embedded in Iraq, then the terrorists would be in the US, on our soil, attacking our unsuspecting and unprotected civilians.

And whatever nationality these extremists are, then all people of that nationality would become a target by Americans seeking retribution. There would be much civil unrest in the United States.

In the book, Flags of Our Fathers, the author talks about how Americans were tired of the war (WW II) and were ready to seek peace with the Japanese.

If this had been allowed to happen, North Korea would surely have captured South Korea and set its eyes on Japan. That part of the world would not know the peace it knows today and many countries in that area would probably be communist countries today.

As long as America is in Iraq, we have a foot in the area where terrorism is bred. The terrorists are coming for our troops, men and women who are trained to deal with them. Our troops are men and women who are suspecting. They are men and women who are protected as well as one can be against an enemy that fights with guerilla tactics.

Iraq is not another Vietnam. The communist fighters of that time had no way to bring a gun war to the shores of America. The Islamic extremists have proven that they have the will and the means to do so.

We must stay the course and stop the Iraq war politics. We must allow freedom to take hold in Iraq. The stakes are high, the American lives lost are precious, but failure in Iraq is not an option.

Some people want Bush impeached.

More on why America is in Iraq.
