Climate in Baghdad Iraq

This page is about the climate in Baghdad Iraq.

Baghdad, Iraq has low humidity which is important when the temperatures get above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. It gets very hot in the summer, usually has some good rain in the fall, and there will even be ice on the windshield of your vehicle every once in a while in the winter. But there is really no spring there.

Average temperatures for climate in Baghdad Iraq range from higher than 120 degrees in July and August to below freezing in January. Most of the rainfall occurs from December through April in amounts of 4 to 7 inches, but I have seen it rain more than this. And it only takes a little bit to turn things into a muddy mess.

The mountainous region of northern Iraq receive appreciably more precipitation than the central or southern desert regions. Most of the annual rainfall occurs between November and April, most of it in the winter months from December through March.

The remaining six months, particularly the hottest ones of June, July, and August, are dry. There will be no rain and usually no clouds, unless there is a dust storm.

The combination of rain shortage and extreme heat makes much of Iraq a desert. Because of very high rates of evaporation, soil and plants rapidly lose the little moisture obtained from the rain, and vegetation could not survive without extensive irrigation.

Some areas, however, although arid, do have natural vegetation in contrast to the desert. For example, in the Zargros Mountains in northeastern Iraq there is permanent vegetation, such as oak trees, and date trees are found in the south.

However, when it does rain, the ground tends to become compacted, so hard that it will trap water below the surface, in pockets and retain it. If you have the proper equipment, you can drill for these pockets and have a supply of water.

At Camp Warhorse, we were drilling for water. They found a nice pocket of what seemed to be good water, so they started using it for the laundry facility. Over time the water got used up and then a sinkhole was created as we saw one of our vehicles disappear into a hole one day. Oooops!

If you are going to experience climate in Baghdad Iraq, then prepare to be hot. The military and civilian contractors have lots of A/C and heat on hand but one cannot always count on being where these are and sometimes they are not enough. Pack clothing for hot and cold weather. Bring your coat and rain jacket.
