Afghanistan Time Zone

It took me a few days to realize that the Afghanistan Time Zone was a little different than what I was used to. It is on a 30 minute increment instead of an hour. I used to wonder when calling my wife or getting an email why our time was off by 30 minutes.

Afghanistan does not use daylight savings time. Afghanistan Standard Time is GMT (UTC) +4.5. UTC stands for: Coordinated Universal Time which is also the atomic clock.

In 1955, the atomic clock was invented. This provided a form of timekeeping that was both more stable and more convenient than astronomical observations.

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. All time starts from this Point. Why? Well I do not know, but everything needs a starting point.

Greenwich, which is located in England, has been the home of Greenwich Mean Time since 1884. It is measured from the Greenwich Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich where all time zones are measured.
