Afghanistan Major Cities
Afghanistan major cities includes Kabul which is the Capitol of Afghanistan. It sits on the western edge of the country just hours away from the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad. Kabul is the only city with over one million people.
Afghanistan major cities are Herat, Kandahar, Mazar-e Sharif, Jalalabad, Ghanzi and Kundz. Herat is a city in western Afghanistan, in the province also known as Herat. It is situated in the valley of the Hari River. Herat is situated in a fertile area, and was at one time known for its wine before it became a Muslim nation. Now it is known for its poppy production. It is the second largest city in Afghanistan, with a population of 349,000. Herat is an ancient city with many historic buildings, although these have suffered damage in various military conflicts during the last few decades. The city is dominated by the remains of a citadel constructed by Alexander the Great. During the Middle Ages, Herat became one of the important cities of Khorasan, and it was known as the Pearl of Khorasan. Herat is situated favorably on the ancient and historic trade routes of the Middle East, South Asia, Pakistan, China, India and Europe. The roads from Herat to Iran, Turkmenistan, Mazar-e Sharif and Kandahar are still strategically important.

Kandahar is the third largest city of Afghanistan major cities, with an estimated population of 324,800. It is the capitol of Kandahar province, located in the south of the country. The Arghandab River runs right next to the city.Kandahar is a major trading center for sheep, wool, cotton, silk, felt, food grains, fresh and dried fruit, and tobacco. The region produces fine fruits, especially pomegranates and grapes, and the city has plants for canning, drying, and packing fruit. Kandahar has an international airport and extensive road links with Farah and Herat to the west, Ghazni and Kabul to the northeast, Tarin Kowt to the north, and Quetta in Pakistan to the south. Due to mountain ranges, road passages are few in number often being only two lanes wide and winding as high as a mile up into the mountains. Kandahar is also known for its poppy production and insurgency. Insurgents come to Kandahar through Iran and Pakistan. There is a large US military presence in Kandahar. Also in past years, DynCorp did poppy eradication in Kandahar. But due to tribal leaders and corruption, the poppy eradicated was only a drop in the bucket. Also, pomegranates produced in Afghanistan are becoming a popular fruit in Europe. However, the money is made though, most of a farmer's profits are garnished by the Taliban for use in their war often leaving the farmer with very little to get by. And what the Taliban does not take, the local corrupt governor will. But if the farmer does not cooperate, his sons are killed while his wife and daughters are raped, while he is forced to watch. There are many farmers who want to do right but are not able to do so.

Another Afghanistan major city is Jalalabad which is in the Nangahar providence. I have been to the governor’s palace in Nangahar to drop off wheat seed and fertilizer for the local farmers.
Our mission was to actually give it to the local farmers along with a prayer rug. However, the governor took the seed and said he would pass them out, which I doubt happened. He also told us what to do with the prayer rugs.
Our mission was interrupted by an attack that left three of our guys injured. However, we did complete it in true United States fashion.
